Our Family and
Philosophy
The Schreiber Wine
Estate is a family-owned mid-size winery looking back on more than 500
years of
wine tradition and experience. The grapes are grown on the terroir of
the
Klausenberg in Rheinhessen. The loam soil, clay and sunshine conditions
let the
grapes reach full ripeness and balanced acidity allowing for an
excellent
harvest quality under the watchful eyes and generations of experience.
Dr.
Andreas Schreiber, noted viticulturist and winemaker currently manages
the
estate together with his wife Carmen and his parents Helmut
and
Elsbeth
Schreiber. Their emphasis on quality and preserving the
vineyard’s natural
conditions for generations is their philosophy for producing excellent
tasting
wines.
Fundamental
to our long tradition of
producing quality wines is our
standing philosophy to produce only the highest level of quality in
grapes. Simply stated, wine
quality
starts in the vineyards! We
strive to
use only the best white grapes ripe with full flavour and aroma. For
the red wines we harvest only the best
grapes with rich dark colours to produce the best quality red wines.
All grapes are harvested and selected at
the estate under the watchful
eyes of two generations of winemakers. The
fermentation and aging occur in the climate
controlled cellar in
stainless steel or aged wooden barrels. All
red wines are fermented in wooden barrels and aged in
toasted
barrique (222 liter) or larger (8,000 liter) oak barrels.
Location
Situated
on the left bank of the Rhein
River, the town of Abenheim is
close to the historical city of Worms and located in Rheinhessen, the
largest
of the 13 wine growing regions in Germany. Although
most people think of Worms
as
the famous cathedral city where Martin Luther faced down Emperor
Frederick at
the Imperial Diet, Worms'
Liebfrauenkirche, or Church
of Our
Lady,
gave
its name to the wine
produced from grapes grown
in church vineyards as early as the mid-1700’s.
Abenheim’s
prime location and
Rheinhessen's
long winemaking history are the building blocks of a reputation for
producing world
class wines.
Winemaker
Dr. Andreas Schreiber
The
Schreiber Estate looks back on a 500 year family
tradition of
winemaking. Since 2001, Dr. Andreas
Schreiber has been leading the winery, experimenting with new
techniques and
wines while maintaining the high quality-sound standards for the
production. Born in 1968, Andreas
gained
valuable knowledge not only with the family winery but by venturing out
to work
for other winemakers in Rheinhessen and Mosel
wine regions. After completing his
doctorate degree in viticulture, he returned home to assist in the
family
business. Currently, Andreas also
serves
on the Board of “pro-Riesling”, an organization in
Rheinhessen to promote
Riesling wines and is a founding member of “Vinovation
Worms”
which together with
other vintners explores and promotes new and innovative wines. In
addition, he is a Certified Wine Tester for
the German Food Administration and the Agriculture Administration of
Rheinland-Pfalz.
Import
and Distribution in USA
The
growing popularity and demand for quality German
wines in the USA
moved us in 2001 to begin importing wine to the USA. Through
our warehouse located in Greenville, South
Carolina,
we have been able to distribute and ship wines to the Southeast and
across the USA.
